Tech Productivity

Issue #54  (Revolutionize Your Note-taking) 02/24/20

Many in the tech industry are now using DuckDuckGo as their default search engine. If you're in the same boat, you might also find that some searches don't quite get you what you want. Well, if you want a quick way to do a Google search via DuckDuckGo, just append your search query with !g and the results will automatically display from Google's main search instead of DuckDuckGo.

Hopefully this is a rare need but it's good to know because the search results between DDG and Google can vary wildly at times. Also, you'll notice in that screenshot above that there are other flags (or "bangs") you can add to your search queries. For a full list see their source on !bangs, which, unbelievably, lists over 1300 by category!

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!

Tools & Apps

Motion - Chrome extension that actively prevents you from getting distracted on the web through real-time interventions, reminders, and analytics.

Global IT Burnout Index - Free and anonymous online test based on scientific questionnaires created by psychology professionals, to get data on burnout levels in the tech industry.

Poplar - A private journal with offline data storage and cloud syncing option that enables you to make better decisions from personal insights and analytics.

MyRSS.email - Get your newsletter subscriptions via RSS.

Noko - Online time tracking software. There are lots of these kinds of apps but this one seems to come with some positive testimonials.

Articles & Resources

How to Maximize Your Income as a Software Engineer - This piece by Mathew Kuhn certainly cuts to the chase. His views, so not all will agree, but worth a read.

More Bosses Give 4-Day Workweek A Try - Many countries around the world are embracing this idea and I'm strongly in favour of it. One of the keys mentioned here is that this isn't just about increasing hours per day, but many are going with 32-hour work weeks.

Study: Facebook quitters report more life satisfaction, less depression and anxiety - I honestly don't even know why Facebook still exists. Main source for this is a Bloomberg article but this is one of the key findings.

How To Take Smart Notes: 10 Principles to Revolutionize Your Note-Taking and Writing - This is more or less a book review, but lots of meat to this article, so you don't necessarily have to buy the recommended book to benefit here.
