Issue #43 (Asynchronous Communication) 12/09/19
One of this week's articles (see links below) includes a brief post from 2011 based on a 1990s study looking at why some violinists are elite at their craft, while others (who apparently spent the same amount of time practicing) are not nearly as good.
Why are some violinists elite at their craft?
Some of the findings include:
- While all spent the same amount of time practicing, the elite players were spending almost three times more hours than the average players on deliberate practice.
- The average players spread their work throughout the day, while the elite players, by contrast, consolidated their work into two well-defined periods.
- The elite players slept an hour more per night than the average players.
- Based on time spent in leisure activities, the elite players were significantly more relaxed than the average players, and the best of the best were the most relaxed of all.
As both a hobby musician and a web developer, this was an interesting set of conclusions and I'm sure some of this is helpful to those of us trying to be better at something, whether it's a technical skill or something outside of our field of work.
