At some point I came across a video by Benjamin Keep, a cognitive scientist specializing in learning and instruction. It's called
A Simple Way to Learn Complex Skills. The video looks at an experiment that was done using gaming as the example 'skill', but the same overall concept can be applied to just about any complex task.
It's a short video at less than five minutes, but it looks at how you can approach learning a complex skill that can't be broken up into more isolated steps. For example, something simple like brewing a cup of tea can be broken up into discrete steps, but this doesn't work with things that have "interdependent parts".
The video looks at a study that was done where different groups of participants were given different instructions, to help determine how best to approach the challenge. An interesting result!
