Digital note-taking is much more popular today than it was a decade ago or more. Of course, there have been studies in recent years that demonstrate that taking notes by hand can be better for retention and learning.

But what if you have years of handwritten notes that you want to convert to a usable digital format? Last year, a Hacker News reader asked what would be the best way to transcribe thousands of handwritten notes.

Handwritten notes

In this case the user is asking about transcribing 10 years worth of journals where the handwriting is not great. Not sure what the best way to handle this is, but the suggestions include:
  • Read the notes aloud into a voice to text app
  • Summarize them (rather than transcribing word-for-word)
  • Use an app (lots of suggestions in the discussion)
In this instance, not all apps will work, due to the user's poor handwriting. But if you have a similar need, you might have better results with one of the app scanning or text reading tools.

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!
