Here's a video short from Ryan Holiday, a best-selling author on "marketing, culture, and the human condition." The video is called How to Give Your Full Attention to What You’re Doing. There's nothing really all that groundbreaking in what he's saying in this short clip, but it might serve as inspiration or motivation for you if you have trouble focusing on one thing at a time (see also the last article link below, which is on the same topic).

Ryan Holiday, NY Times Bestselling author

Here's a basic transcript of the video:

"We're not present because we have a device in our pocket at all times. We're not present because we're thinking about this while we're doing that. We're not ever where our feet are with what we're doing. I talk about this with people who have kids. When you're with your kids, can you be with your kids? Not with your kids and doing this at the same time?

Multitasking is the enemy. To be able to focus and be where you are is such an important thing. It makes the thing you're doing better. The stoics would say 'very little is made better by inattention.' To be doing the thing you're doing and not giving it all you have is probably a sign you shouldn't be doing that thing."

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!

Articles & Resources

In the Trenches: What it Means to be an Engineering Manager — A thorough look at one engineering manager's experiences in these types of roles with some tips that may help both managers and engineers they oversee.

The Average American Spent 2.5 Months on Their Phone in 2024 — Apparently this is a 42.3% increase over the same study done a year prior. But I wonder if there's more context needed here. For example, are people spending less time on other devices, which would explain this?

Sick of Biased News? — Sign up for 1440, a free newsletter that has no biased opinions and is only a 5-minute read.     sponsor

How I Automated My Job Application Process — This is the first of a three-part series that goes into a lot of coding detail. I don't normally share code-heavy articles in this newsletter but this one seemed pertinent.

The Four Types of Distractions That Derail Your Focus — A general list of distractions broken down into things we can control and things we can't control and annoying vs. fun for both those categories.

Why Kind Workplaces Are More Successful — The idea here is that both managers and employees are willing to be "prosocial" and go above and beyond for the cause. I would argue this is fine as long as the benefits are also passed on to the workers.

I Got Tired of My Own Inability to Focus on One Thing — Lots of food for thought here on something you might be able to relate to. Is lack of focus always a bad thing? Not if the thing you're moving on from is less valuable than the next one.
