Based on people I've spoken to who are trying to find a remote job online, the remote job market is extremely saturated right now. If you try to apply for a job via a popular platform like LinkedIn, you'll often see that dreaded message, "Over 100 applicants". And that's usually a huge understatement, since LinkedIn never seems to tell you if that number is over 500, or over 1000, etc.
I have lots of bits of advice for people looking for a job in this market (remote or not). I'm no expert, of course, because I'm basically an independent creator, but here's the advice I would follow:
- If you apply for a job, don't use LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. to apply. Find the company's website and apply through them directly. At least this way there's more assurance that the job is legit.
- If they don't discourage it, call or email someone at the company directly, or find an HR person on LinkedIn and message them. Ask about the position and request to set up an interview.
- Keep a spreadsheet or other document that records all the jobs you apply for. If a job is delisted but they still call you, you will have a record of the full description (copy the whole thing) so you can refer back to it in your pre-interview research.
- Don't be afraid to ask specific questions early that can seem taboo. For example, you don't want to waste your time applying to jobs that are way under your pay range, only to find that out in the 3rd interview. Ask about salary ranges early, if possible.
- Network with different people on social media, LinkedIn, etc., that are in your industry. Blog about something in your industry, so you can have contacts with others that might have a lead for you.
Not all of the above advice will apply to everyone, and some of it might seem daunting if you're an introvert. But I think some of the suggestions here are beneficial and will help you avoid wasting time in your job search.
Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!
