On Hacker News a few months back a user started an interesting thread called
Beware 'Ungrowth' in Your Job that you may be able to relate to. I had previously never heard the term 'ungrowth' before, but the concept isn't too foreign from what we used to customarily refer to as a 'dead-end job'.
Of course, even a so-called 'dead-end job' may be fine for many people. A lot of people have lives outside of work that they view as more important than their job (e.g. taking care of kids). So the job is just a means to an end. That's fine and I think 'ungrowth' can be overlooked in a case like that, or similar.
But the user in the thread definitely makes a good point when discussing the current obsession we see everywhere regarding "growth":
"... growth only works when you build on someone's strengths. Trying to ask someone to grow by changing who they fundamentally are, leads to withdrawal, stagnation, and anti-growth."
There's lots of discussion in the thread about similar experiences others have had with suggestions on how to overcome the problem. Worth a scan if you're looking for some inspiration related to your own growth, or lack thereof.
