I've heard lots of good things about the benefits of a sit/stand desk setup, but I've put off getting one. I hope to consider it some time in 2023 if my budget allows, and if I have the time to revamp my current setup.

If this is something you're considering, you might enjoy this Twitter thread initiated by Mike Karan. The thread isn't about the different types of desks available (you can do a search for those posts, some get updated around this time of year), but instead he asks his followers, "How often do you stand?"

Standing Desk

The discussion is mainly from those who use a sit/stand desk setup, but I think the answers can help those who might be on the fence about whether to switch to a sit/stand desk. Some of the answers include:
  • About 35% of the time
  • Most of the day, due to injury
  • 20% of the time (to prevent a toddler from pressing buttons!)
  • During all meetings
  • Every hour
  • Standing less the longer the desk is owned
  • 50% of the time until hips started hurting, then 20%
  • 30 – 120 min per day
As you can see there's a variety of answers, but a lot of them are fairly similar. Most people probably don't expect to stand most of the day, or even half the day. And it's natural that the "I can stand while working" novelty wears off after a while and you stand less over time. It's also good to know this feature can be used to prevent children and animals from interfering with important work! 😂

Whatever your thoughts are on the subject, maybe this will help you decide if a sit/stand desk is the right choice for you and if it's worth the investment.

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!
