Issue #153  (Breaking a Day Into 5-Minute Slots) 01/17/22

In a recent thread on Hacker News a reader asks for advice on Strategies to land  a fully remote $250k+ job. That's probably one of the more ambitious Ask HNs I've personally come across. The overall discussion, including the top comment, is a good reminder that we really are in a workers' market right now.

Markets trending up

Of course, in-demand skills are essential but it's nice to see this sort of thing trending up, even though there are other things going on economically, socially, and otherwise that are impacting people's livelihoods negatively.

Traditionally though, this sort of thing tends to even out, whether it's due to inflation, market dips, or other factors. I think the suggestions in the article linked below called 'How To Be as Useful as You Can' would apply in a situation like this (see links below).

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!

Tools & Apps

Accomplishments App - Easily make a list of your achievements at work, and get reminded by email each week to take note of your triumphs. Might be useful for a future performance review.

FreeFileSync - A folder comparison and synchronization app for Windows, Mac, and Linux that creates and manages backup copies of all your important files.

DigStack - A digital whiteboard app for teams with optional private boards, collab metrics, searching/tagging, and board exporting, among other features.

Parsio.io - A no-code email parser to extract and export valuable data from your emails and documents automatically.

WebCrate - An open-source bookmarking tool that helps you organize and share links, articles, and more in a central place.

ummm - A note-taking tool for professional thinkers and researchers. Write down your thoughts in discrete but connected lines of thought, expanding horizontally with time.

How Tempo Got Their Data in Shape - High-growth fitness start-up Tempo needed to better organize their data to continue growth. Their solution? Mozart Data’s [modern data stack/modern data platform] and a 76% reduction in time-to-insight.   sponsored

Articles & Resources

Keep A Log - Bruno Oliveira believes keeping a written log will help in a number of areas including remembering, saving brain power, and helping others when the need arises.

The Flowtime Technique: A Pomodoro Alternative - This suggestion is based on the idea that no two tasks are the same, thus improving on the Pomodoro technique of 25-minute work periods.

How To Be as Useful as You Can - Suggestions here include playing the long game and prioritizing learning – among other things expanded on in the full piece.

100+ Resources for Optimizing Productivity & Performance: 2022 Edition - A big list that covers both hardware and software in 7 categories (probably uses affiliate links).

I Tried Breaking My Day Into Five-Minute Slots - The author discusses a productivity hack associated (apparently falsely) with Elon Musk that was annoyingly inflexible but helped.
