Issue #133  (Learning How to Unplug) 08/30/21

In the curated links below, I've included a brief article from Fast Company that links to this study that ranks the effectiveness of productivity hacks.

Productivity Hacks

Some interesting findings here. Some of the most effective hacks are:

  • Use two monitors
  • Go for a walk
  • Block distracting websites
  • Use natural lighting
  • Have fewer meetings
The five least effective productivity hacks?
  • Polyphasic sleep (I don't even know what this is)
  • Multitasking
  • Taking cold showers
  • Having a clean desk/workspace
  • Getting up early
A few of these are a little surprising and if you're wondering about the reliability of the study, the study itself is based on about 30 other sources, so there's some decent research put into this.

Now on to this week's hand-picked productivity links!

Tools & Apps

FSNotes - A modern notes manager for macOS and iOS that respects open formats like GitHub-flavored Markdown, so you can easily write documents on iPhone and MacBook.

Orbital - Team chat app that's always ready so you can pop in for meetings, quick chats, open-door office hours, or cowork together through the day – all at the same link.

Mergefeed - Paste a bunch of links into the field to get a single 'multi feed' link to all the sources. Might be good for quickly sharing a bunch of URLs.

Org-roam - A plain-text personal knowledge management system that's open-source and privacy-friendly.

Memorigi - A visually-oriented to-do list, task manager, planner, calendar, and reminder app to help you organize life and work.

Free PDF Generation API - Use pdflayer to automate PDF generation on your website. This free API renders HTML to PDF quickly and easily. All it takes is a few lines of code and a free API key to get started. Get Your Free API Key!   sponsored

Articles & Resources

Thoughts of Work Invaded My Life—Until I Learned How to Unplug - Good read for those who can't quite achieve the appropriate work-life balance (i.e. checking work emails during a wedding ceremony).

Talking Out Loud to Yourself is a Technology for Thinking - I love this advice. Although it's definitely not the best thing to do in public, I do believe it's a powerful tool to talk aloud to learn, memorize, organize, etc.

Your Future Work Experience is Smart Work Anywhere - This is somewhat promotional, but the overall concepts discussed are important in today's changing work environment.

Why Most Productivity Hacks Don't Work - Quick read based on a couple of studies that are worth checking out.

The Case For a Shorter Workweek - Personally I'm working towards the zero-day work week, but maybe that's just me.

Run Node.js Applications Faster and Safer with Unikernels - The easiest way to deploy your Node.js applications to the cloud. No servers to manage – deploy in tens of seconds.    sponsored
