If you're looking to build a product that's successful, here's a Hacker News thread about a technique called "10x rule" put forth by Peter Thiel which says:

“You have to be 10 times better than second best.”

In the thread users give examples of successful products that could be described as being 10x better than the competition at the time.

Some examples include Google Search (when it first launched), Google Maps, Firebug, and Gmail. Certainly an interesting discussion if you're a builder.
